The Delta variant it is frightening Europe and in particular Great Britain, where it has taken advantage of the total reopening to return the infections to surge: in the last 24 hours almost 30 thousand have been registered, compared to 37 deaths. Fortunately, the latter figure remains quite low because the vaccination campaign is in an advanced state in the country governed by Boris Johnson: on the two doses the level of protection reaches up to 95 percent.
What is happening in Great Britain must set off an alarm bell also in Italy, where the Delta variant will soon become predominant and nothing can be done to avoid it. Guest of On air, the broadcast of La7 conducted by David Parenzo and Concita De Gregorio, Matteo Bassetti spoke on the theme: “In August this variant will be as predominant as it is today in England. We must invest in the vaccine: if we arrive in October with 80-85% of Italians vaccinated we can be calm, otherwise the situation will be of great pain”.
The infectious disease specialist appealed to a sense of common responsibility and in particular to teachers, given that over 200,000 have not been vaccinated: “In the last year and a half, school has not been such, we would like our children to return to safe school. To do this, not only the children, but also the teachers must be vaccinated. This summer is highly pathetic, there is an enormous responsibility of the politics that fluctuates on vaccines, without taking a clear position. I didn’t expect it ”, Bassetti commented.
