Due to the pandemic, World Taekwondo has organized the first world championship of forms and freestyle online: out of 7 blues, 3 will face the semifinals from today. The finals from 7 to 12 December in live streaming

Covid-19 has stopped the competitions, but not all! These days, in fact, the Poomsae World Taekwondo Championships have started, guess what… online! Well yes, the world championship that should have been staged in May in Herning, Denmark, then canceled due to the pandemic, is taking place right now in an online version. “World Taekwondo believes that sport is indispensable in our daily life” – declared the president Chungwon Choue in the presentation communiqué -. The Poomsae 2020 World Championships are an initiative aimed at helping the large taekwondo family through a competition that can give the hint of normality and give positivity “. Collected the videos of the participants between October 12th and November 13th, the preliminary phase then began on the 16th. The Italian national team certainly could not miss, 7 blues in the race: Alice Virgulto, Alessio Notaro, Hyeon Wook Kang, Andrea Notaro, Luigi Parisella, Morgana Piccinetti, Michelangelo Sampognaro. Of these, three won the passage to the semifinals: Notaro Andrea and his son Alessio, respectively in the under 30 and under 60 categories, and Hyeon Wook Kang in the under 40. The blue coach told us about this experience and… the race to the final. From today to 6 December the semifinals, from 7 to 12 December the finals live streaming on the World Taekwondo youtube channel.

Notary, the shape is different, but the substance always remains the same: Italy confirms itself at the top of this specialty.

“Seven of us participated in the semifinals and three of us, an excellent result. Italy is one of the most highly rated nations at an international level. Even if online, it is still a real race with a world title at stake, which is why it is not we left nothing to chance aiming for the best possible result. The goal is always the same: to get on the podium, to win. Today we will record the videos for the semifinals, the participants will have until December 6 to upload them, then we will know the names of the first ones eight of each category who will arrive at the finals which will be broadcast live from 7 to 12 December “.

Has this difficult period of pandemic affected preparedness?

“Yes, both physically and mentally. The lockdown prevented all top athletes from being able to express themselves and participate fully in competitions: this had a negative impact, but we worked hard to be ready anyway. “.

How does the approach change from a face-to-face competition to an online one?

“Obviously it is very different compared to a face-to-face competition, above all because you have the possibility to repeat your form several times and to upload the video of the best execution, while in the race it either goes or smashes it. The greatest difficulty in this case is in the number of participants, being online the registrations were massive. The last competition we played was the Austrian Open on February 8 and 9, we had won them the first place as a national team with 5 golds, 4 silver and 3 bronze. And we were really preparing ourselves for the World Cup in May, but Covid has changed all plans. And here we are, ready to go all the way anyway. ”
