Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram and Messenger were falls for several hours last night.
The most important thing that has happened to the Internet in the whole year happened yesterday when Facebook closed for almost 6 hours in total. As a result, messaging services like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger were inaccessible to Facebook’s 3.5 billion Internet users. Since then, Facebook has blamed a “faulty configuration change” for the outage.
After the service was restored, Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a statement on Facebook: “Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger are coming back online now.” Sorry about today’s outage. I know how much you trust our services to stay connected with the people you care about. “
Facebook released a statement that said, “The underlying cause of this outage also affected many of the internal tools and systems that we use in our day-to-day operations, complicating our attempts to quickly diagnose and resolve the issue.” Our engineering teams have learned that configuration changes to the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centers caused problems that disrupted this communication.
“This disruption of network traffic had a cascading effect on the way our data centers communicate, bringing our services to a standstill.” Our services are now back online and we are actively working to bring them back fully to the normal operations. “We want to make it clear at this time that we believe the primary cause of this outage was a faulty configuration change. We also have no evidence that user data has been compromised as a result of this downtime.”
Shares of Facebook fell a whopping 4.9% after the close.
Internet users turned to Twitter, TIkTok, and Reddit, among other platforms, for information and communication over the time period. It’s safe to say that there were some great internet memes that came out of the “internet shutdown.”
