Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is giving couples a good reason to avoid sky-high restaurant bills this Valentine’s Day, as the company is launching its Movie of the Day app on Apple TV Tuesday.
The app, previously available on iOS devices, gives customers a 24-hour window to purchase a movie in digital HD for a price between $4.99 and $9.99, which represents as much as a 75 percent discount off retail price. The movie changes every day, with “Kingsman: The Secret Service” being first up on Feb. 14 for $7.99.
Fox says the iOS app has been getting traction, with nearly 90 percent of its users returning and engaging with it on a daily basis. The Apple TV version allows them to watch the movies in full big screen glory.
This week’s other titles include “Deadpool” on Feb. 15, “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” on Feb. 16, “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates” on Feb. 17 and “Epic” on Feb. 18.
“Deadpool” may not be textbook Valentine’s week fare, but scary and violent movies tend to do surprisingly well on that holiday. The film, Fox’s highest-grossing of 2016, reeled in $783 million worldwide as audiences fell in love with Ryan Reynolds’ profane mercenary. “Deadpool” even picked up Golden Globe nominations for Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture and Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.
