Windisch and the challenges of 2022: from the Cup to the Olympics

Towards the debut in Oestersund, where the blue became world champion. “Then I’ll have to plan the wedding too”

Windisch is the man of the wind and often seizes the moment. This is how it happened in the Sprint night of the PyeongChang 2018 Games: Dominik was able to conquer the bronze first alone and then again with the mixed relay as in Sochi 2014. It happened even better in Oestersund in Sweden, in the storm of 15 km: where Dominik in that unforgettable Sunday 17 March 2019 – also made gold by Dorothea Wierer – became the third blue world champion after Andreas Zingerle (1993) and Willy Pallhuber (1997). In short, the Italian biathlon owes a lot to Domme, who has just returned from a season with no highs and only lows. But the South Tyrolean Army biathlete has always been used to starting from scratch. He has never been disheartened. He never got lost. With the calm of the strong and unshakable confidence. The Olympic season, then, has always inspired the former world champion, who therefore also clings to memories to restart and give a further redemption to his career. At 32, we begin to think about a future beyond skiing and shooting, but Beijing 2022 represents the turning point for this final part on which it will depend whether to continue until the Italian Games of 2026.

Return to Sweden

On Saturday, for his debut in the World Cup, Dominik will immediately have the opportunity to find the right feeling: in that same Swedish track in Oestersund where he exalted himself for the world title. Together with the expert Lukas Hofer, returning from a brilliant season, and the younger Didier Bionaz and Tommaso Giacomel, he will try to re-tie the threads and put the heavy summer work to good use. “I left free of charge, after having worked without interruptions and with more intensity on specific aspects such as the approach to the polygon. I put myself to the test precisely to overcome those difficult moments: in short, I am leaving confidently for the season ”. And what thoughts accompany him towards the Chinese Games in February? “We couldn’t try the track, we’ll all get there in the dark and they’ll be surprised. But I prefer not to think about the Olympics yet, not to imagine how it will be, I still can’t really get into that climate, I did everything I could and wanted. And above all I’m calm, I have specific goals “. Also because, confirms Windisch “for three months we have completed the interiors of the house and we went to live there, it turned out really beautiful. It was a commitment, I took another weight off my head to focus on biathlon ”.

To his Julia he dedicated a special ring after the Olympic exploits made with the same material as the medals. “The wedding? We would like it to be a great party with friends and without the masks, we have already identified the place and are just waiting for what happens with the pandemic to plan the wedding. But we are already happy like this. We are left with the curiosity to see what will happen in the race ”. The man of the wind, who stresses his limits with faster and tighter sessions, therefore has the aim ready …
