Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Thursday launched a full-scale invasion that killed dozens, forced more than 50,000 to flee Ukraine in just 48 hours and sparked fears of a new Cold War in Europe. India is “deeply troubled” by the recent turn of developments in Ukraine, India’s permanent representative to the United Nations has said. Urging that all efforts be made for the immediate cessation of violence and hostilities, he said that no solution could ever be found at the cost of human lives.
Speaking at the UNSC meeting on Ukraine, Tirumurti said India was also deeply concerned about the welfare and safety of the Indian community, including a large number of Indian students in Ukraine. “The contemporary world order was built on the Charter of the United Nations, international law and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States. We accepted the proposal of the President of the Russian Federation. Currently, the parties are debating where and when the negotiation process will take place during these hours. The sooner negotiations begin, the better the chances of a return to normal,” he said.
