Russian forces are at a standstill and in some cases may have lost ground after gaining a foothold in Ukraine, according to the Institute for the Study of War.
The invaders have significant troop presences across the country, but a number of reported counter-offensives have retaken areas that were previously under Russian control, with Ukrainian reports of success northwest and east of Kyiv , near Kherson in the south, and on the eastern front near Kharkov.
Ukraine is located in Eastern Europe. The first Russian attack came from the South, in Crimea, from the East, in Russia, and from the North, in Russia and Belarus.
It is a strategically important country both for Russia and for the coalition of NATO countries. While Ukraine has substantial ties to Russia, the country has recently sought to align its interests with those of Europe and the United States. Less than 72 hours later, Putin launched a full-scale attack on Ukraine.
Russia is invading Ukraine from several directions. Over several months, Russia gathered its forces in Belarus, western Russia and the Black Sea – a force the United States estimates at more than 150,000 troops and with vehicles, artillery, tanksand field hospitals to launch a massive assault. A senior US defense official told reporters that approximately 95% of these amassed forces had already been engaged.
On February 24-25, 2022, Russian forces moved towards the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. There were missile strikes seen on video reports area, and officials reported that troops were advancing towards the town of Chernihiv. Ukrainian said on February 24, 2022 that Russian forces attacked through the Chernobyl exclusion zone and took control of it.
Russian forces remain pinned down outside the city.
There are 15 nuclear reactors in Ukraine which are distributed in four power plants.
