RUSSIAN troops reportedly seized a Ukrainian town with a naval base as tanks rolled in and armed soldiers took over buildings.
As Vladimir Putin’s army continues its stumbling but deadly assault on Ukraine, Russian forces have reportedly taken control of Berdyansk – a port city of 100,000 people on the coast of the Sea of Azov.
Oleksandr Svidlo, acting mayor of the town near the Crimean peninsula, confirmed on Facebook that troops took over on Sunday, as footage showed moving tanks.
“A few hours ago, you and I witnessed how heavy military equipment and armed soldiers entered the city and started advancing in our hometown,” he said.
“As soon as I heard about this, I tried to inform everyone in town so that you have the opportunity to hide in shelters. »
Svidlo – an adviser to Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office – said “armed soldiers” entered the executive committee building and introduced themselves as Russian army soldiers.
“They informed us that all administrative buildings were under their control and that they were taking control of the executive committee building,” he added.
“Under the control of armed men, I consider this proposal unacceptable, so we, like all members of the operational staff, left the building of the executive committee.

Panic had spread to the city’s 1.4 million residents when authorities ordered a dawn lockdown.
Authorities confirmed the invading forces were inside the metropolis, located just 20 miles from the Russian border.
Russian units launched a pincer movement in the city with convoys of Tiger armored vehicles following overnight shelling by Grad rockets, tank shells and Smerch missiles which failed to crush the brave forces from Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the world’s biggest plane is believed to have been destroyed by Russian troops – the restoration is expected to cost £2.2billion.
Ukrainian officials said the huge plane – the only one of its kind – was parked at an airfield near Kiev when it was hit by “Russian occupiers”.

Meanwhile, peace talks are due to take place between Ukraine and Russia, Zelenskyy confirmed today – although Putin has put his nuclear forces on high alert.
Diplomats from Kyiv and Moscow are set to meet “without preconditions” near the Pripyat River on the Belarusian border as Putin’s invasion brews for the fourth day.
But Zelenskyy admitted he was not convinced of a positive resolution of the talks, saying: “I don’t really believe in the outcome of this meeting, but let them try, so that later no Ukrainian citizen will doubt that me, as president, tried to stop the war.
It comes after Putin put his nuclear forces on high alert just after warning that the West “could face the greatest consequences in history”.
The Russian tyrant is said to be ‘furious’ that he was unable to rein in Ukraine and has hit out at NATO for its ‘hostile measures’ which he says forced him into the gamble frightening nuclear.
The move means Putin has ordered the world’s largest stockpile of nuclear warheads prepared for launch readiness, raising the terrifying possibility that the crisis and miscalculation could turn into nuclear war.
