New agreement aims to reduce mobile equipment waste, advance 5G services and improve multi-device digital experiences for end users

Samsung Electronics and Orange today announced a series of new initiatives that expand their long-term strategic partnership to improve the experience of Samsung Galaxy users across Europe. The two companies will collaborate to reduce waste and extend the life cycle of mobile devices; implement device and technology testing to prepare for the arrival of standalone 5G; promote the Samsung Galaxy multi-device experience; and improve the mobile customer journey with advanced digital services.

Together, the companies are working to reduce the waste attributable to Samsung mobile devices distributed by Orange by extending the life cycle of a typical product. Orange will offer an extension of the take-back and collection programs for used Samsung devices and will add a Samsung Certified Refurbished device program through Orange channels. Additionally, the collaboration will leverage the implementation of the Eco-Rating methodology, a pan-industry initiative led by a consortium of European mobile operators, on Samsung Galaxy smartphones. The new rating will assess the environmental impact of mobile phones throughout their life cycle, from design to disposal, allowing Samsung and Orange to implement further improvements.

As part of this agreement, Samsung and Orange are also preparing the deployment of advanced 5G autonomous (SA) services. The collaboration will see the implementation of end-to-end testing of Samsung devices and technologies such as network slicing and voice on Orange’s 5G SA test networks. The process will explore new use cases made possible by the capabilities of the 5G SA network to support both advanced industrial services and entertainment-related services.

Samsung and Orange are also strengthening their collaboration to offer Orange customers a connected experience powered by Samsung Galaxy devices. This multi-device approach will be rolled out across Orange stores and online channels to support Orange’s multi-service strategy, delivering an immersive and seamless mobile experience to end users.

Additionally, the companies will combine their products and technology assets to deliver an enhanced digital activation experience to Orange customers through personalization of Samsung smartphones. Samsung will deploy SIM-based personalization of its mobile devices for Orange customers on a single mobile software configuration. Samsung’s Live Customization Service will make it easier to discover and install key Orange apps seamlessly on eligible Samsung Galaxy smartphones, regardless of where customers purchase their Galaxy smartphones.

Finally, Samsung and Orange will gradually roll out eSIM activation to a wider range of Samsung devices connected to Orange’s networks. This will further simplify the experience for their users and reduce the share of plastic SIM cards used in Orange’s European footprint.

Philippe Lucas, Executive Vice President, Orange Innovation Devices and Partnerships, Orange, said: “This partnership closely reflects Orange’s core priorities, contributing to our goals of acting quickly to achieve our circular economy ambitions and meet consumer and societal demand for durable appliances by pushing take-back and refurbishment programs to extend product lifecycles and reduce waste. Additionally, our commitment to sustainability will drive innovation, enabling differentiation and ultimately growth as we respond to changing customer needs. Our close working relationship with Samsung is a major asset in realizing these ambitions. »

“Samsung is dedicated to innovative strategic partnerships that allow us to extend positive impact around the world,” said Bryan Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of Strategic Marketing, Mobile eXperience Business, Samsung Electronics. “We are delighted to strengthen our relationship with Orange and to see Galaxy devices being recycled and reused in different ways and helping to provide a smoother experience for the Galaxy community. »
